The Amish Country

The Pennsylvania Amish of Lancaster County are America’s oldest Amish settlement, where thousands still live a centuries-old “Plain” lifestyle. We just wanted to see what they look like. We heard about them and saw them on tv. Witness, starring Harrison Ford was filmed in a village like this. There is civilization among some Amish, with rides on their carts one of the tourist attractions. However most still live the life according to tradition.

They don’t use cars, there are no electrical lines going into their farms. It’s peaceful.

We practically just drove past on the way to Washington DC. It was a nice detour. Without going too deep into the meaning of life, I think I could live like that, as long as I had the opportunity to see the rest of the world. Not being able to use any other forms of transportation than your legs or a horse cart has some major limitation for a traveler.
